Indian-origin man sentenced to 25 years in Canada for 2022 murder case

VANCOUVER: A Canadian court has sentenced Indian-origin man Balraj Basra to 25 years in prison in connection with a 2022 murder case. A British Columbia Supreme Court jury on Tuesday found Basra guilty of first-degree murder and arson, City News reported.

According to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), Basra was convicted for the shooting death of 38-year-old Vishal Walia at a University of British Columbia golf club on October 17, 2022, CBC reported.

Two others involved in the crime — Iqbal Kang and DeAndre Baptiste — have already been sentenced. Kang received 17 years in prison and an additional five years for arson, while Baptiste was sentenced to life imprisonment with no parole eligibility for up to 17 years.

Investigations revealed that the trio shot and killed Walia before setting a vehicle on fire. The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) said the suspects fled the scene in another vehicle but were quickly identified by officers.
