Chandigarh: An Indian-origin American national allegedly shot dead his nephew over a land dispute in Machhike village under the Nihal Singh Wala police station area on Saturday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Navdeep Singh and Bahadur Singh Sekhon, Deputy Superintendent of Police Nihal Singh Wala Anwar Ali said. Station House Officer Puran Singh Dhaliwal confirmed that the accused and the victim were cousins, adding that the accused holds US citizenship. Navdeep Singh worked as an arhti.
According to preliminary investigation, an argument broke out between Bahadur Singh Sekhon and his nephew Navdeep Singh in an agricultural field, during which Sekhon allegedly opened fire with a revolver, killing Navdeep on the spot. There were also local reports claiming that the accused shot his nephew in the forehead and then drove his vehicle over the body.
Police said that after the incident, Sekhon returned home, where villagers surrounded him and alerted the authorities. A police team reached the spot and took him into custody.
Bilaspur outpost in-charge Jaswant Singh Sara said a case has been registered and an investigation is underway. Navdeep Singh’s father earlier served as the sarpanch of the village.
