New Delhi: India’s leading airline IndiGo on Saturday cancelled 57 flights across multiple airports citing adverse weather conditions.
According to the airline’s website, 13 more flights have been cancelled for Sunday. Most of these cancellations are due to weather forecasts and some operational reasons. Affected cities include major airports such as Chandigarh, Amritsar, Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kolkata.
It is notable that the aviation regulator DGCA has declared the period from December 10 to February 10 as the official “fog season”. During this time, airlines are required to deploy trained pilots for low-visibility operations and aircraft equipped with CAT-IIIB systems.
IndiGo’s operational challenges have increased after thousands of flights were cancelled earlier this month following the implementation of new pilot duty and rest norms. After the disruption, the government had already ordered a 10 percent cut in the airline’s daily schedule, limiting IndiGo to operating no more than 1,930 flights per day.
Despite having advanced navigation systems such as CAT-III, which allow landings in visibility of less than 50 metres, bad weather and operational constraints continue to cause difficulties for passengers. The DGCA is currently keeping a close watch on IndiGo’s operations.
