Industrialist Rajinder Gupta likely to be AAP candidate for Rajya Sabha bypoll in Punjab

Chandigarh: Industrialist Rajinder Gupta, chairman of Trident Group, is likely to be the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate for the October 24 Rajya Sabha bypoll. Gupta is expected to file his nomination papers for the lone vacant seat next week.
Gupta had recently resigned from his positions as vice-chairman of the State Economic Policy and Planning Board and chairperson of the Shree Kali Devi Advisory Committee. He was appointed vice-chairman of the Planning Board in 2022 and became chairperson of the temple’s advisory committee in Patiala in August this year.
He has previously served as vice-chairman of the Planning Board during the Congress and SAD-BJP governments as well.
According to official sources in the ruling party, Gupta’s resignation came on a “positive note” and he is being considered the frontrunner for the Rajya Sabha bypoll.
The AAP government, which holds 93 seats in the 117-member Punjab Assembly, is reportedly seeking a prominent Punjabi candidate for the contest.
