New Delhi: An Israeli defence company has delivered the first batch of light machine guns (LMGs) to India under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, along with technology transfer.
Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) said it supplied 2,000 Negev (7.62×51) LMGs last week as part of a larger contract for 41,000 units. The company added that another 4,000 LMGs are scheduled to be delivered later this year.
The supply has been executed through PLR Systems, a joint venture between IWI and the Adani Group, which is India’s first private-sector manufacturer of small arms and ammunition.
The company said the delivery marks the successful completion of the technology transfer process under the Make in India programme and reflects its commitment to meeting timelines and quality standards.
The Negev (7.62×51) is among the lightest machine guns in its category and features semi-automatic capability. It is widely used by the Israeli Defence Forces and is designed to operate effectively in challenging conditions.
The development is expected to strengthen India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and reduce dependence on imports.
