ITR filing deadline extended by one day, taxpayers get till September 16

New Delhi: The Income Tax Department has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITR) by one day to September 16. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) announced the extension on Monday, giving taxpayers a few more hours to complete the process.

Officials said that taxpayers who fail to file their returns on time may have to pay penalty and interest, along with facing other difficulties.

The filing process is now fully online. Taxpayers are required to register on the Income Tax portal and select the appropriate ITR form — such as ITR-1 for salaried individuals and pensioners, or ITR-3 for those with business income. The return must then be submitted with details of income and taxes.

For e-verification, options such as Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or demat account are available. The department has cautioned that delay in verification may lead to a slowdown in return processing.
