Jalandhar Bar Association observes ‘No Work Day’, accuses police of negligence

Jalandhar: The Bar Association in Jalandhar observed a ‘No Work Day’ on Monday, alleging negligence and favoritism by the police. Court proceedings came to a halt as lawyers associated with the association began their protest at 10 am.

The association appealed to lawyers, judicial officers, and administrative departments to cooperate in the protest. In a meeting that continued till late evening, it was decided that Tuesday will also be observed as a non-working day. The Bar Council has passed a resolution urging the immediate implementation of the Advocate Protection Act.

The Bar Council of India has also taken cognizance of the issue and directed Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav to take action. Lawyers are scheduled to meet officials of the Jalandhar Commissionerate on Tuesday to decide the next course of action.

The association has accused the police of failing to arrest Parvinder Singh, father of Sandeep Singh, despite having evidence, and not registering an FIR against Sam Kwatra. The Bar termed the police’s approach as objectionable and insensitive, alleging that the investigation has not been impartial.

The lawyers also criticized the police for not acting against objectionable and provocative videos circulating on social media. They have demanded immediate registration of an FIR, arrest of the accused, and removal of the controversial content.
