New Delhi: Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan on Wednesday questioned the government over the naming of ‘Operation Sindoor’, launched in response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Participating in a special discussion in the Rajya Sabha, she criticised the choice of name, saying it was ironic given the tragedy faced by the victims.

“Why did you name it ‘Sindoor’? Sindoor is the symbol of a married woman, and here their sindoor was wiped away,” she said, referring to the women who lost their spouses in the attack. Bachchan paid tributes to the victims and expressed grief over the killings, adding that it was disturbing how people were murdered in front of their loved ones.

She accused the government of misleading the public about the situation in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370. “The government said terrorism would end, that everything was normal. People believed these claims and went there. Who is responsible for their deaths now?” she asked.

Calling the government’s assurances deceptive, Bachchan demanded that it apologise to the families of the victims. “Had the government not made tall claims about normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir, perhaps these tourists would not have travelled there and their lives would not have been lost,” she said.
