New Delhi: Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on Monday, succeeding Justice BR Gavai. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office at a brief ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Justice Kant took oath in Hindi in the name of God. He was appointed as the next Chief Justice of India on October 30 and will serve for nearly 15 months. He will demit office on February 9, 2027, upon attaining the age of 65.
Justice Kant has been part of several significant judgments, including the verdict on the abrogation of Article 370. The ceremony was attended by Vice President CP Radhakrishnan and PM Modi.
The event marked a key moment in the judiciary as Justice Kant assumed leadership of the Supreme Court for his tenure ahead.
