New Delhi: Yashwant Varma has resigned from his post, more than a year after a political storm erupted over the recovery of unaccounted cash from his official residence in Delhi.
The resignation was submitted to President Droupadi Murmu, effectively allowing him to avoid potential impeachment proceedings in Parliament.
Earlier, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla had admitted a motion seeking his removal and constituted a three-member committee under the Judges Inquiry Act, 1968, to probe the allegations.
Varma had challenged the Speaker’s move in the Supreme Court, but his plea was dismissed, allowing parliamentary proceedings against him to continue.
With legal options exhausted, he stepped down from office.
The controversy dates back to March 2025, when a committee was set up by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna to investigate the recovery of unaccounted cash from Varma’s Delhi residence. At the time, he was serving as a judge of the Delhi High Court.
Following the probe, Varma was transferred to the Allahabad High Court, where he continued to serve until his resignation.
