Lok Sabha disrupted repeatedly as Opposition moves no-confidence notice against Speaker Om Birla

New Delhi: Proceedings in the Lok Sabha were disrupted multiple times on the 10th day of the Budget Session on Tuesday amid loud protests by Opposition members, forcing several adjournments.

As soon as the House assembled at 11 am, Opposition MPs raised slogans over various issues, leaving no scope for debate. Presiding officer P C Mohan adjourned the House within a minute till noon. However, the disruption continued when proceedings resumed at 12 pm, prompting another adjournment till 2 pm.

In a major escalation, Opposition parties led by the Congress submitted a notice for a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said the notice, bearing signatures of 118 MPs, was submitted at 1.14 pm.

Opposition leaders accused the Speaker of functioning under pressure from the ruling party and alleged that they were being denied opportunities to raise issues in the House. They argued that this left them with no option but to seek his removal.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party countered the move, with its MPs saying that instead of targeting the Speaker, the Opposition should bring a no-confidence motion against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Speaker Om Birla later directed Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh to examine the notice moved by the Opposition and take appropriate action as per parliamentary procedure.

The repeated disruptions meant that the scheduled discussion on key legislative and budgetary business could not be taken up during the day.
