Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has scrapped the 5% reservation for the Muslim community in jobs and education.
According to a Government Resolution (GR) issued on Wednesday, the ordinance brought in by the previous Congress-NCP government has lapsed. The government has also cancelled all related circulars issued since 2014.
The new order bars the issuance of caste certificates and non-creamy layer certificates to Muslims under the Special Backward Category.
Opposition parties criticised the move, accusing the ruling Mahayuti alliance of being “anti-minority”. Congress leader Naseem Khan alleged that the decision is aimed at keeping backward sections within the Muslim community away from mainstream development.
An NCP (SP) spokesperson said the step shows that the BJP does not value even its Muslim allies. Opposition leaders further claimed that despite the Bombay High Court allowing 5% reservation in education, the government deliberately chose not to implement it.
