Amritsar: In a tragic incident in Amritsar, Punjab, on Monday, a father allegedly committed suicide along with his two daughters by consuming poison. The man, reportedly distressed over unemployment and financial difficulties, called out to a neighbour before taking the step, saying, “Hug me once, I won’t be back.” The neighbour immediately informed relatives, who rushed to the house but could not save them.
The deceased have been identified as Lovepreet Singh from Shahura village, his elder daughter Jaspreet Kaur (8), and younger daughter Virpal Kaur (6). According to the deceased’s aunt, Sarabjeet Kaur, Lovepreet had been unemployed for a long time and under severe mental stress due to the lack of work. His brother and sister-in-law had passed away many years ago.
On Monday morning, Lovepreet had dropped his wife, Kuldeep Kaur, and son at work in Attari before returning home. He reportedly called his children, who were playing outside, inside and asked them to sit with him under a quilt. He then gave them a poisonous substance and consumed it himself. After calling the neighbour, he reportedly said, “Hug me once, I won’t be back.” The neighbour rushed them to the hospital, where the doctors declared them dead.
Police reached the scene after receiving information and have started an investigation. The bodies were sent for postmortem under Section 174 of the CrPC. Police officials said a detailed probe is underway to examine all aspects of the case.
