Man posing as CBI officer held by lawyers for job fraud at Chandigarh district court

Chandigarh: A man posing as a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer was caught by lawyers at the Chandigarh district court on Tuesday while allegedly attempting to cheat a lawyer by promising a government job. The accused was later handed over to the Chandigarh Police, who have taken him into custody and begun questioning.

According to advocate Rajesh Singh, his daughter has completed her graduation. He said a man identified as Satish had been frequently visiting the court premises and introduced himself as a CBI officer, even showing a purported identity card. The accused claimed he was on special duty and could secure a job for Singh’s daughter in the CBI.

The lawyer alleged that Satish initially took ₹7,000 as “registration fees” for the job. On Monday, the accused again contacted him, claiming it was the Chandigarh home secretary’s birthday and asked for more money to buy a mobile phone as a gift, saying he would arrange the remaining amount himself.

Growing suspicious, advocate Rajesh Singh informed fellow lawyers about the matter. On Tuesday, when Satish arrived again at the Chandigarh district court to collect money, alert lawyers caught him red-handed and informed the police.

During a search, a file was recovered from the accused containing several documents bearing fake Central Bureau of Investigation stamps. The accused had claimed that the lawyer’s daughter’s file had already reached the CBI headquarters in Delhi and that a joining letter would be issued soon, while asking for the remaining money later.

On receiving information, Chandigarh Police reached the spot and took the accused into custody. Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain how many people he may have cheated using the same modus operandi.
