Man shot while trying to save elderly in Amritsar, condition critical

Amritsar: A firing incident late on Saturday night in Adarsh Nagar of Amritsar’s Kot Khalsa area triggered panic among residents after a young man was shot while trying to save an elderly person from an assault.

Vikram was returning home after a night vigil in the area when he saw Gulshan, a local resident, allegedly beating an elderly man. Vikram intervened and tried to stop Gulshan, following which an argument broke out between the two, his sister-in-law Priya said.

According to Priya, as the dispute escalated, one of Gulshan’s relatives came out of the house carrying a pistol and opened fire without warning. The bullet hit Vikram in the leg, causing him to collapse on the spot. Hearing the gunshot, people from the neighbourhood rushed to the scene and the injured man was taken to hospital.

Doctors said Vikram’s condition remains critical.

Police reached the spot soon after receiving information about the incident. On the basis of Vikram’s statement, Gulshan has been taken into custody. During questioning, Gulshan said the shooter was his relative, who fled after the firing.

Priya demanded that the absconding accused be arrested at the earliest. She said Vikram had only acted out of humanity but was forced to pay a heavy price for it.
