Mark Carney to visit India; talks with PM Modi to boost bilateral ties

New Delhi: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will arrive in India on Friday for a four-day visit aimed at giving fresh momentum to India-Canada relations.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart will provide an opportunity to advance the bilateral partnership across multiple sectors.

First India visit as PM

This will be Carney’s first visit to India as Prime Minister. The trip comes against the backdrop of strained diplomatic ties following tensions in 2023 over the killing of a Khalistani separatist in Canada.

Carney will begin his visit in Mumbai, where he is scheduled to participate in business engagements and interact with leading Indian and Canadian corporate leaders, financial experts and innovators.

He will travel to New Delhi on Sunday, with comprehensive talks between the two Prime Ministers scheduled for Monday.

Focus on strategic partnership

According to the MEA, the two leaders will review progress made in the India-Canada strategic partnership, building on their earlier meetings in Kananaskis in June last year and Johannesburg in November.

The visit is expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, technology and people-to-people ties, while seeking to stabilise and reset diplomatic relations between the two countries.
