Markets shut in Kapurthala as Valmiki community protests against AAP leader

Kapurthala: Markets across Kapurthala remained completely shut on Tuesday following a call by various Valmiki community organizations. The bandh was organized to demand registration of a case against AAP leader Manju Rana.

Valmiki community leader Charanjit Singh Hans said that last year, near Mansurwal, Manju Rana allegedly used objectionable words against certain members of the community at the Shri Bhagwan Valmiki Temple. A complaint was lodged with the police, but no action has been taken so far.

In protest, community members observed the bandh today, with support from local residents. In the morning, members of different Valmiki organizations gathered at the Shri Bhagwan Valmiki Temple, before marching through main markets in a demonstration of anger. Police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order during the protest.

DSP of the sub-division, Sheetal Singh, said that over 125 security personnel were deployed during the bandh. Medical stores, hospitals, doctors’ clinics, and other emergency services continued to operate.

Valmiki leaders have urged the administration to register a case against Manju Rana at the earliest. They warned that if no action is taken, the agitation will continue and may escalate to the state level.
