Mitchell’s unbeaten century powers New Zealand to seven-wicket win over India, series level 1-1

New Delhi: An unbeaten century from Daryl Mitchell and a fluent half-century by Will Young helped New Zealand defeat hosts India by seven wickets in the second one-day international on Sunday. The victory leveled the three-match series at 1-1, setting up a decider on January 18.

Chasing 285 for victory, New Zealand completed the task comfortably on the back of Mitchell’s unbeaten 131 off 117 balls, which included 11 fours and two sixes. Young provided solid support with 87 runs, while Glenn Phillips remained not out on 35.

For India, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav and Prasidh Krishna claimed one wicket each.

Earlier, India posted 284 for seven after opting to bat first. KL Rahul anchored the innings with an unbeaten 112, while captain Shubman Gill scored 56.

Openers Rohit Sharma and Gill gave India a strong start, adding 70 runs for the first wicket. However, New Zealand’s bowlers tightened the screws in the middle overs to restrict the scoring rate.

For the visitors, Christian Clarke was the standout bowler, picking up three wickets for 56 runs. India also saw starts from Virat Kohli (23) and Ravindra Jadeja (27), but neither could convert their innings into a big score.
