Mohali: Punjab Police on Tuesday encountered Harpinder alias Middu, one of the accused involved in the murder of Kabaddi player and promoter Rana Balachauria, in Laldu area of Mohali district.
Police said Middu had allegedly shot Balachauria on the pretext of taking a selfie. During the encounter, the accused sustained bullet injuries and was admitted to hospital for treatment. Two policemen were also injured in the exchange of fire.
Earlier in the day, police revealed photographs of two other shooters, identified as Aditya Kapoor and Karan Pathak, who were involved in the killing and had allegedly planned the attack in a systematic manner.
Investigators said the murder also involved other individuals who were carrying out continuous recce and passing information about Rana Balachauria during the Kabaddi tournament. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest those suspects.
Middu is a resident of Nowshera Pannuan village in Tarn Taran district. Police said preliminary investigations suggest that the accused has been involved in several criminal incidents in the past.
Punjab Police shared details of the encounter in an official post on social media, said further investigation in the case is ongoing.
