Mother of accused in attack on Delhi CM Rekha Gupta says son has no political links

New Delhi: The mother of the man accused of attacking Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday claimed that her son had no connection with any political party and had travelled to the national capital to protest against the Supreme Court order on stray dogs.

The accused, identified as Rajesh Sakariya (41), is a resident of Gokul Park on Kotharia Road in Rajkot, Gujarat. According to the Delhi Chief Minister’s Office, Rekha Gupta was attacked during a public hearing at her Civil Lines residence on Wednesday morning. Police said Sakariya has been taken into custody and is being interrogated.

Sources in the BJP’s Delhi unit said the attacker first handed some papers to the chief minister during the hearing before assaulting her.

After his arrest, Rajkot police visited his house and questioned his mother, Bhanuben Sakariya. Speaking to reporters, she said her son works as an auto-rickshaw driver and has no political affiliations.

“He is an animal lover and was deeply pained by the Supreme Court order to shift stray dogs from the streets of Delhi to shelters. A few days ago, he went to Haridwar and later told us on the phone that he was going to participate in a protest in support of dogs in Delhi,” she said.
