New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party MP and former Indian cricketer and Harbhajan Singh raised concerns in the Rajya Sabha over the growing availability of obscene content on social media platforms, particularly Instagram, and its impact on children.
Speaking during a discussion in the House, Singh said the misuse of digital platforms has become a serious threat to the future of young users and called for stricter regulations to control such content online.
He noted that material similar to “soft pornography” is increasingly being shared on platforms like Instagram and is accessible to children as young as 12 or 13 with just a single click.
Singh warned that such content can negatively influence children’s mindset and distort their perception of women. According to him, constant exposure to such material may encourage the objectification of women and lead to a decline in social values.
The former cricketer urged the Government of India to introduce stronger digital safety laws and regulate websites and platforms that host obscene material.
He also called for strict action, including banning websites that promote such content, stating that it harms society and undermines moral values rather than providing any public benefit.
