Kathmandu: Violent protests in Nepal have left at least 22 people dead and more than 400 injured as unrest swept across Kathmandu and surrounding areas. Demonstrators torched Parliament, the private residences of the Prime Minister and President, and seized weapons from security forces.
The homes of three former prime ministers were also attacked. Former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal’s house was set on fire, and his wife Rajalakshmi Chitrakar suffered severe burns. She was rushed to Kirtipur Burn Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba was beaten inside his residence after an intruder barged in, while Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel was assaulted near his Kathmandu home. A viral video shows a protester kicking him in the chest.
Amid the spiraling violence, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned from his post and was airlifted to safety by an army helicopter. Security forces remain deployed as protests continue across the capital.
