Chandigarh: A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has rejected the bail pleas of three key accused in the 2018 grenade attack at Maqsudan police station in Jalandhar. The accused have been identified as Amir Nazir, Shahid and Fazil Basir.
The court said the seriousness of the case, terror-related allegations and available evidence did not allow their release on bail. The NIA had booked the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code including 307 (attempt to murder), 120B (criminal conspiracy), 427, 153, 153A and 153B. They were also charged under sections 10, 13, 15, 16, 18, 20 and 23 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
According to the NIA investigation, the accused were linked with pro-Khalistan terrorist organisations and were allegedly conspiring to spread terror in Punjab. All three are currently in judicial custody. The agency has already filed a charge sheet in the case.
The investigation further revealed that on September 9, 2018, four hand grenades were handed over to an associate of the terrorist organisation near the Verka plant in Jalandhar. Later on September 13, two individuals identified as Rauf Ahmad Mir and Umar Ramzan travelled from Kashmir to Chandigarh and then reached Jalandhar by road as part of the conspiracy.
