Toronto: In a significant development following recent diplomatic tensions, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Commissioner Mike Duheme has said there is currently no evidence linking the Government of India to covert activities or transnational repression on Canadian soil.
In an interview, Duheme stated that based on available intelligence and ongoing investigations, there is no indication at present of such activities being carried out in Canada with connections to India.
He noted that in cases of alleged transnational repression, it can sometimes be difficult to definitively attribute actions to a specific foreign entity. “Based on the files we have and current criminal intelligence, we are not seeing links to any foreign entity at this time,” he said during the interview.
The remarks mark a shift from his earlier stance in October 2024, when Duheme had indicated that the RCMP possessed credible evidence suggesting that incidents involving intimidation and violence against members of the Sikh community in Canada could be traced to “higher levels” of the Indian government.
At that time, allegations also included claims that Indian diplomats were involved in gathering intelligence and sharing it with criminal networks. The latest statement signals a more cautious position, as investigations continue.
Officials have not ruled out further developments, but emphasised that conclusions will depend on evidence emerging from ongoing probes.
