Tehran: Nobel Peace Prize winner and Iranian human rights activist Nargis Mohammadi has been arrested in Iran, her supporters said.
The Nargis Foundation said on Friday that Mohammadi, 53, was detained in Mashhad, around 680 km northeast of Tehran, while attending a memorial service for a human rights lawyer who was recently found dead under unclear circumstances.
A local official reportedly confirmed that arrests had been made but did not directly name Mohammadi. It remains unclear whether she will be sent back to prison immediately. Mohammadi had been serving a sentence but was temporarily released in December 2024 on medical grounds.
Her detention comes amid a renewed crackdown on intellectuals and activists as Iran faces mounting pressure from international sanctions, a struggling economy and fears of a renewed conflict with Israel.
Mohammadi’s arrest is expected to increase pressure on Tehran from Western countries, particularly at a time when Iran has repeatedly signaled its willingness to hold fresh talks with the United States over its nuclear programme, negotiations that have yet to materialise.
