Washington: Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, often referred to as the “Iron Lady” of Venezuela, has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.
The Nobel Committee said Machado received the prestigious award “for her tireless efforts in promoting the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and her struggle for a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
The committee noted that its decision to focus on Venezuela this year came amid growing global attention on democratic movements.
It added that while much media attention has centered on US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, the committee chose to highlight Venezuela’s fight for freedom and justice.
