Kapurthala: A 48-year-old woman was shot dead at her residence in Punjab’s Kapurthala district on Friday after unidentified assailants opened fire and fled the scene.
According to police, the attackers arrived on two motorcycles and fired around four rounds. The incident came to light around 4 pm. Police teams reached the spot soon after receiving information and cordoned off the area. A forensic team also collected evidence from the scene.
The deceased has been identified as Hempreet Kaur a resident of Seenpura in Kapurthala. She was divorced and had returned from Canada about a month ago. Her husband and son are currently living abroad.
DSP Sheetal Singh said the woman was alone at home at the time of the incident. Two suspects arrived on a motorcycle and one of them entered the house and opened fire at her. He said a local resident tried to stop the attacker by shutting the gate but the accused fired in the air and escaped with his accomplice on the bike.
DSP Sheetal Singh said the case is being investigated and special teams have been formed to identify and arrest the accused. He added that police are examining all possible angles to ascertain the motive behind the shooting.
Neighbours said Hempreet Kaur had started working at a beauty parlour a few days ago. She is survived by a son.
