Chandigarh: Protesters marching towards the residence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over the alleged suicide of Punjab Warehousing Corporation district manager Gagandeep Randhawa were detained by Chandigarh Police on Sunday.
Opposition parties, including the BJP, Shiromani Akali Dal and Congress, had united to demand Mann’s resignation and the arrest of former minister Laljit Singh Bhullar in connection with the case.
Leaders and workers had gathered at the MLA Hostel in Sector 4 before attempting to march towards the chief minister’s residence. However, Chandigarh Police stopped them at the hostel gate using barricades.
As protesters tried to move forward, police used water cannons to disperse the crowd and later took several demonstrators into custody.
Senior leaders, including Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, were present during the protest.
The opposition leaders raised slogans against the Punjab government and reiterated their demand for Bhullar’s arrest, intensifying the political confrontation over the case.
