New Delhi: On Monday, around 300 opposition MPs marched from Parliament to the Election Commission’s office to protest alleged voter verification issues and vote theft in the recent election.
The protest saw a large-scale disruption as several prominent leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and Akhilesh Yadav, were detained by police. They were taken to the Parliament Street police station and released two hours later.
During the demonstration, TMC MP Mitali Bag’s health deteriorated and she fainted. Rahul Gandhi and other MPs assisted her immediately.
Earlier in the day, both Houses witnessed a major uproar over the allegations, leading to proceedings being adjourned until 2 p.m., when they resumed.
The march started from the Capricorn Gate of Parliament with MPs holding banners reading “Save the Vote.” However, Delhi Police blocked the route near Transport Bhawan, citing that no permission was sought for the march from India Block authorities.
When MPs attempted to proceed, including Akhilesh Yadav who jumped the barricades, they were stopped and forced to sit on the ground.
Protesting MPs, including Priyanka Gandhi and Dimple Yadav, shouted slogans such as “vote thief Gaddi Chod” before being detained by police.
