New Delhi: A ruckus is likely on the second day of the monsoon session today after the first day witnessed disruptions in both Houses. The Rajya Sabha proceedings were conducted by the Deputy Chairman following the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar late on Monday, who cited ill health.
As soon as the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha met at 11 am, opposition parties raised slogans demanding a discussion on the recent Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindhru. With the uproar continuing, both Houses were adjourned first till 12 noon and then again till 2 pm.
Earlier in the day, opposition MPs staged a protest outside Parliament against the Special Comprehensive Revision of Electoral Rolls (SIR) in Bihar, holding placards and raising slogans. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, Punjab MP Charanjit Singh Channi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal and Kanimozhi Karunanidhi were among those present during the protest.
In a major development, Vice President Dhankhar resigned late on Monday citing health reasons. Dhankhar, who presided over the Rajya Sabha on the opening day, had addressed the House regarding the impeachment proceedings against High Court judge Justice Yashwant Verma. According to reports, he may not attend the Rajya Sabha today and is unlikely to deliver a farewell speech.
The monsoon session, which began on July 21 and will run until August 21, includes 21 sittings over 32 days. Both Houses will break for Independence Day celebrations from August 12-17 and resume on August 18.
