Over 2.6 million sign petition seeking leniency for Indian-origin truck driver in Florida accident case

New Delhi: A petition demanding fair punishment for Indian-origin truck driver Harjinder Singh, facing charges in a fatal road accident in Florida, has received more than 2.6 million certified signatures within days.

Harjinder Singh, 28, a native of Ratol village in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, was arrested after an accident on August 12 in which three people were killed. He is accused of making an illegal U-turn, causing a car to crash into his trailer.

Singh, who reportedly entered the United States illegally in 2018 and later obtained a commercial driver’s licence in California, is currently in custody.

The online petition, addressed to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, describes the incident as unintentional and terms the possible punishment “inhuman.” It urges authorities to explore alternatives such as parole eligibility, leniency, or community service.

Several political leaders, including Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, along with community organisations, have appealed for a fair trial. Relatives of Singh in Ratol village have also called for justice and fair treatment in the case.
