HOSHIARPUR: Following the tragic murder of a five-year-old boy by a migrant labourer in Deep Nagar, several panchayats in the district have passed resolutions taking tough measures against migrants. The move by the panchayats of Bajwara and Shanti Nagar villages has come to light.
Police said Harvir Singh, a resident of Deep Nagar, was abducted and killed by a migrant, who later dumped the child’s body at a crematorium. The killing has triggered widespread anger, with growing calls for the expulsion of migrants from Punjab.
At a meeting chaired by Jasvir Singh Jassi, the Shanti Nagar panchayat resolved that all migrants living illegally in the village must leave by September 20. Those residing legally have been asked to get their documents verified at the local police station. Migrants living in houses for years have been directed to stay within the ambit of law and avoid any disturbance.
The panchayat also said that landlords renting to migrants would be held accountable for any unlawful acts committed by their tenants.
In Bajwara, sarpanch Rajesh Kumar Babbu said the panchayat has resolved not to allow any house or plot to be given to migrants. He added that no migrant will be issued Aadhaar, PAN card, or any other identification documents in the village.
