New Delhi: The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has sought the involvement of subject matter experts in the re-evaluation of the Air India Boeing 787-8 crash, raising concerns over possible technical misinterpretation or mechanical defects in the aircraft.

Air India’s Boeing 787-8 had taken off from Ahmedabad for London Gatwick on June 12 and crashed into a building shortly after take-off. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) released its preliminary report on the incident on July 12.

According to a source, the FIP has written to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, highlighting concerns over the preliminary findings. While appreciating the timely release of the report, the federation said it appears to directly or indirectly indicate the possibility of pilot error.

The pilots’ body alleged that the report failed to consider or acknowledge two possible and pre-recorded technical aspects, either of which could have led to the simultaneous shutdown of both engines.

It added that this is not the first instance where failures in Boeing aircraft systems have initially been linked to pilot error or attempted suicide, only to be disproved by subsequent investigations.
