New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday became the second longest-serving prime minister in India’s history, surpassing Indira Gandhi’s tenure.

According to parliamentary records, PM Modi completed 4,078 consecutive days in office on Friday, overtaking Indira Gandhi’s record of 4,077 days in her two terms from 1966 to 1977.

The milestone was recorded between PM Modi’s visits to the UK and the Maldives. Jawaharlal Nehru remains the longest-serving prime minister of India.

Top BJP leaders hailed the occasion on X, with the party calling it a “remarkable achievement in Indian democracy” and noting that PM Modi’s tenure marks a single, uninterrupted period in office.

BJP leader Amit Malviya said that PM Modi is also the only leader from India to win six consecutive elections as a party leader.
