PM Modi, Trump discuss Middle East tensions, stress keeping Strait of Hormuz open

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation on Tuesday to discuss the evolving situation in the Middle East, with a key focus on ensuring the security of global energy routes.

According to US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, both leaders emphasised the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, given its critical role in global oil supply. The narrow maritime passage carries nearly 20–30% of the world’s crude oil shipments.

The discussion comes amid rising tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States, raising concerns over potential disruptions to energy supply chains and global trade.

Both sides acknowledged that any blockade or instability in the Strait of Hormuz would have far-reaching consequences, impacting not only regional security but also the global economy.

Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region and assured cooperation in safeguarding key trade routes. With India heavily dependent on oil imports from Gulf nations, any disruption in the passage could lead to a sharp rise in fuel prices domestically.

The leaders agreed that ensuring uninterrupted movement through the strategic corridor is essential for global economic stability and energy security.
