New Delhi: Premium petrol prices in Delhi were increased by ₹2 per litre on Friday, while bulk diesel rates saw a sharp rise of around ₹22 per litre, driven by a surge in global crude oil prices amid tensions in West Asia.
Following the hike, premium petrol now costs ₹101.89 per litre, up from ₹99.89. Industrial (bulk) diesel is now priced at ₹109.59 per litre.
However, there has been no change in the prices of regular petrol and diesel. In Delhi, petrol continues to be sold at ₹94.77 per litre and diesel at ₹87.67 per litre.
Officials from the petroleum ministry said the increase has been limited to premium fuel categories, which account for only 2–4% of total fuel sales in the country, and therefore is unlikely to directly impact the common consumer.
A senior official clarified that the government’s focus remains on shielding the general public from price fluctuations. The recent hike, they said, is a response to rising international crude oil prices linked to the ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Iran.
The move reflects a calibrated approach, ensuring that while global price pressures are addressed, the burden on everyday consumers remains minimal.
