Chandigarh: The death case of Aqeel Akhtar, the 35-year-old son of former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa, has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Haryana government has written to the Centre requesting the transfer, but the CBI has yet to respond.
On Thursday, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Haryana Police issued a notice to the Mustafa family to join the investigation. However, no one from the family appeared before the team.
An FIR has been registered against former DGP Mohammad Mustafa, his wife and former Punjab minister Razia Sultana, their daughter, and Aqeel Akhtar’s wife under charges of murder and criminal conspiracy. Despite this, none of the four accused have been arrested so far.
Reacting to the transfer of the case, Mustafa told reporters that he had known for two days that the case would be handed over to the CBI. “There are good reasons for this. I don’t have a problem with that. I am ready for any kind of inquiry. It will be better,” he said.
Mustafa added that the final prayer for his son was held on October 25 in Malerkotla, Punjab. “After that, every question will be answered from October 26. I was ready to fully cooperate with the SIT as well. Whatever is asked for will be provided to the investigation team,” he said, referring to his son’s illness.
