Chandigarh: The Punjab Legislative Assembly on Monday passed a censure motion against Sukhpal Singh Khaira following a heated debate in the House over alleged derogatory remarks about women.
The motion, moved by Aam Aadmi Party MLA Sarbjit Kaur Manuke, was supported by finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema. It was brought in response to a social media post by Khaira related to the government’s announcement of ₹1,000 monthly financial assistance for women.
During the discussion, Manuke said the remarks were insulting to women and demanded that Khaira issue a public apology.
After the debate, the motion was put to voice vote by the Speaker. Congress MLAs were given three opportunities to respond during the voting process but remained silent. The Speaker then ruled that their silence would be treated as opposition to the motion, and the censure motion was declared passed.
Earlier, several AAP MLAs, including Inderjit Kaur, Jeevanjot Kaur and Amandeep Arora, gathered near the Speaker’s chair and raised slogans against Khaira, leading to tense scenes in the House during the budget session.
