Chandigarh: The Punjab government is set to hold a Cabinet meeting on March 29 at 5 pm at the Chief Minister’s residence, with key decisions expected on proposed legislation and upcoming political priorities.
Sources indicate that the Cabinet may approve convening a special Assembly session on April 13 to introduce a stricter law on sacrilege. The move comes amid growing political focus ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has earlier stated that amendments to the sacrilege law will be brought during the special session on Baisakhi. The proposed law is expected to include stringent punishment ranging from 10 years’ imprisonment to life sentence for those found guilty of desecration of Shri Guru Granth Sahib.
The government has already held consultations with members of the Sant Samaj regarding the proposed legislation.
Apart from the sacrilege law, the Cabinet is also likely to deliberate on several other proposals. The meeting follows earlier discussions on the state budget and governance issues as the government sharpens its policy agenda ahead of the next elections.
