Chandigarh: The Punjab government on Thursday reshuffled portfolios in the state cabinet, swapping key departments between two ministers. Dr Ravjot Singh was relieved of the local bodies department and assigned the NRI affairs portfolio, which was earlier held by Sanjeev Arora.
Sanjeev Arora has now been given charge of the local bodies department. Following this reshuffle, Arora has emerged as the third most powerful minister in the cabinet, although a formal announcement is still awaited.
The reshuffle is considered significant in view of the upcoming municipal corporation elections. The government is aiming to strengthen its position in urban areas, and the move is seen as part of efforts to reinforce the party’s cadre in cities. Arora hails from an urban background and is considered well-versed with urban issues.
Arora’s elevation is also being linked to his role during Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s recent visit to Japan and North Korea. His contribution during the tour was seen as important, with several business-related agreements finalised. Sources said the government is pleased with his role during the visit.
