CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday condemned the Centre’s notification dissolving the Senate of Panjab University, calling it an attempt to undermine the rights of Punjab. Mann said the move exposes the “anti-Punjab face” of the BJP.
In a video message addressed to the people of Punjab and the country, Mann said the state government would challenge the decision in the High Court and the Supreme Court and is currently consulting legal experts. He added that an Act passed by the Lok Sabha and a state Legislative Assembly cannot be repealed through a notification.
Mann accused the central government of previously eroding Punjab’s rights in matters related to the BBMB and said Panjab University’s Senate dissolution is another step to marginalize the state, including over Chandigarh.
He noted that the Punjab government had recently released a special grant for the construction of a girls’ hostel at the university, yet the Centre continues to harass Punjab. Mann reiterated that his government would strongly oppose the move.
