Punjab CM Mann visits late ADGP Kumar’s family, questions harassment and injustice

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Friday visited the residence of ADGP Y Puran Kumar, who recently died by suicide. During his visit, he met Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, and expressed his condolences to the bereaved family.

Amneet P Kumar, who serves as an IAS officer in Haryana, is the sister of Amit Rattan, Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Bathinda. CM Mann’s visit comes amid allegations that Y Puran Kumar faced harassment from senior officials before his death.

Speaking to the media, Mann said the family was in deep shock and highlighted that Y Puran Kumar came from a humble background. “The family educated their children with great effort, and both husband and wife cleared the UPSC. It is painful that such families and officers are now forced to seek justice,” Mann said.

He added that Y Puran Kumar had dedicated his life to upholding the law and questioned whether systemic discrimination played a role in his death. “Is it a conspiracy that the poor are not being allowed to sit on high chairs? Even the Chief Justice of India is being insulted and mocked. This is shameful,” he said.

Mann further remarked that India thrives on diversity, comparing it to a bouquet with different flowers. “If a child from a poor family reaches the top after studying hard and is still humiliated to the point of taking his life, it is a slap on society,” he said, calling the incident a reflection of systemic injustice.

The Chief Minister also drew parallels with Dr. B R Ambedkar’s struggles, saying that voices from marginalized sections have always faced resistance. “We also come from poor families, and seasonal politicians abuse me and Arvind Kejriwal. Whoever rises from the ground is targeted,” Mann said.

He demanded action against leaders making derogatory remarks about the Chief Justice of India, calling it “an attack on the judiciary and the Dalit community.”
