Punjab government terminates PowerCom director Harjit Singh over alleged misconduct

Chandigarh: The Punjab government on Tuesday terminated the services of PowerCom Director (Generation) Harjit Singh, citing serious misconduct, officials said. The orders were issued by Electricity Department Secretary Basant Garg.

According to the government, despite having its own coal reserves, PowerCom’s Sri Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Plant in Ropar and Sri Guru Amardas Thermal Plant in Goindwal Sahib have been purchasing fuel at a higher rate of 0.75 paisa to ₹1.25 per unit, resulting in losses worth crores of rupees.

Harjit Singh had previously served as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to former PowerCom Chairman-cum-Managing Director Baldev Singh Sarang. The government ended his tenure without issuing any prior notice.

Sources indicated that disagreements over ongoing asset sales by PowerCom and new electricity agreements had strained relations between the Director (Generation) and the Punjab government.
