Ludhiana: Taking note of repeated road accidents outside the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Ludhiana, the Punjab State Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the district administration, seeking an explanation over the absence of a foot overbridge (FOB) at the site.
The commission has asked Ludhiana deputy commissioner Himanshu Jain and municipal corporation commissioner Dr Neeru Katyal Gupta to submit their response by March 12.
The action comes after a complaint filed by social activist Arvinder Sharma, who alleged that thousands of pedestrians cross the busy road outside the ISBT daily, putting their lives at risk. He said several people have lost their lives or suffered injuries while attempting to cross the road.
According to the complaint, local residents have repeatedly demanded construction of a foot overbridge or an underpass for pedestrians, but the administration has allegedly failed to act despite growing safety concerns.
Sharma said he approached the human rights panel two months ago following a fatal accident at the spot. Acting on the complaint, the commission has now sought a detailed report from the district authorities regarding measures taken to prevent further mishaps.
