Chandigarh: Amid growing criticism over the “deteriorating” law and order situation in Punjab from the opposition as well as the state governor, Punjab Police launched of a 72-hour statewide crackdown against gangsters under “Operation Prahar 2.0”.
Director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the first phase of the operation, which began on January 20, has already led to the arrest of over 5,000 gangsters and their associates across the state. He said the second phase would see a massive deployment of police force, with nearly 12,000 personnel forming around 2,000 teams to carry out coordinated action against organised crime networks.
Yadav said the intensified operation was initiated in the wake of recent high-profile crimes, including the killing of an alleged Goldy Brar gang shooter outside a Mohali court on January 28 and the murder of Aam Aadmi Party leader Lucky Oberoi in Jalandhar on February 6.
The police chief said the focus of Operation Prahar 2.0 would be on dismantling gangster networks, arresting wanted criminals and preventing further incidents of violence. He added that strict monitoring and intelligence-based operations would continue during the 72-hour period to ensure effective results.
