Chandigarh: The Punjab State Women Commission has taken suo motu notice of a clash between a woman and a police official in Jalandhar’s Bhargav Camp area and issued a notice to the city’s police commissioner.
The commission acted after videos and reports surfaced on social media allegedly showing a police official misbehaving and physically confronting the woman. Taking serious note, the commission has sought a detailed report from the authorities and directed a fair and impartial inquiry.
Officials have been asked to appear before the commission on March 24. The commission also emphasised that no officer in uniform has the right to take the law into their own hands or disrespect a woman.
According to reports, the altercation reportedly stemmed from a previous dispute or misunderstanding. The viral video shows an argument escalating into alleged pushing and use of inappropriate language, triggering public outrage in the area.
The commission has directed that the inquiry be conducted by a senior officials to ensure transparency. It added that if the officer is found guilty, strict departmental action, along with registration of an FIR, may follow.
The commission assured that the victim will be provided full protection and justice as per law.
