Chandigarh: Polling for the Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections in Punjab began at 8 am on Sunday and will continue till 4 pm. Officials said that around 8 per cent polling was recorded till 10 am.
Meanwhile, controversy erupted during the elections in Raisar village of the Mahal Kalan constituency. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) accused the Election Commission of bullying after its election symbol was allegedly missing from ballot papers at booth number 20 of the block samiti zone, triggering protests at the polling station.
Polling was also cancelled in Khasa and Khurmania villages of Amritsar district due to printing errors in the ballot papers. Officials said that while the name of the Aam Aadmi Party candidate was printed correctly on the ballot paper in Khasa village, the election symbol was incorrect, forcing the authorities to cancel voting.
In a tragic incident from Moga district, a teacher couple died after their car fell into a canal while they were on election duty. According to officials, Jaskaran Singh, a resident of Dhurkot Ransih village, was on his way to drop his wife Karamjit Kaur at Mari Mustafa village for polling duty when their car overturned and fell into a drain. Police said an investigation is underway.
