Punjabi singer Simar Doraha detained, later released by Canadian police; video goes viral

Toronto: Punjabi singer and lyricist Simar Doraha was briefly detained by Canadian police and later released, with a video of the incident going viral on social media. Local police in Canada have not issued any official statement so far.

According to sources, Simar Doraha was taken into custody on allegations of theft but was released shortly afterwards. He had moved to Canada around two years ago. He returned to India last month and had been staying in a rented accommodation in Mohali.

His parents, who reside in Doraha, said they were surprised to learn about the incident through news channels. His mother, Inderjit Kaur, confirmed that her son was detained but released within 20–25 minutes.

She said Simar Doraha has been suffering from bipolar disorder and was undergoing treatment while in India. His condition had reportedly worsened, and the family was trying to persuade him to get admitted to a hospital in Amritsar for treatment.

Following the circulation of the video, several fans reacted on social media, expressing concern and support for the singer.

Simar Doraha is a well-known Punjabi songwriter and singer with close to one million followers on Instagram. He has written between 45 and 55 songs on themes such as social issues, love and life, many of which have gained significant popularity among the youth.
