Punjab’s “Mission Chardhi Kala” – A Ray of Hope for Flood Victims

Punjab E News: Imagine one night your home, your dreams, your entire life gets washed away in water. This is the reality for over 700,000 people in Punjab. This natural calamity submerged 2,300 villages, affecting 2 million people, of which 700,000 were rendered homeless. Fifty-six precious lives were lost and countless dreams shattered. These are not just statistics – they are human stories of pain, families still sitting in relief camps uncertain of their future.

Take for instance the story of 45-year-old Veero Bai of Guddar Bhaini village in Fazilka district. Since August 26, she has been living in a relief camp. “We had to leave behind everything, big and small, when the Satluj waters gushed into our house and rose three feet high,” she recalls. Like her, thousands of families are waiting to go back home. This is Punjab’s most devastating flood in almost four decades. Nearly 500,000 acres of crops were destroyed, wiping out months of farmers’ labor overnight. Around 3,200 government schools suffered damages, where children’s dreams once took shape. Initial estimates suggest losses of about ₹13,800 crore, but the pain and struggle people are going through cannot be measured in numbers.

In these trying times, the Punjab government has emerged as a ray of hope. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, immediate response actions were undertaken. Government teams worked around the clock on relief and rescue, saving thousands of lives. Relief camps were set up, food and medicines distributed. The quick response of the government is commendable. Officers and workers risked their lives in flood-hit areas to serve the people. This stands as proof that Punjab’s government stands with its people, as their shield in every crisis.

Now the time has come for us all to rebuild Punjab together. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s initiative “Mission Chardhi Kala” is not just a campaign but a pledge to rebuild a stronger Punjab. It proves that the spirit of Chardhi Kala cannot be washed away, not by calamities nor by hardships.

As the Chief Minister has said, “The flood didn’t just bring water, it carried away millions of dreams.” But together, we must reignite those dreams. Every broken home must be rebuilt, every scattered family reunited. This is only possible if the people stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the government. Natural disasters are never easy to fight, but with “Mission Chardhi Kala” the first step has been taken. Now it is your turn.

Under “Mission Chardhi Kala,” a comprehensive reconstruction plan is underway. But this goal can only be achieved if the people and the government come together as one.
This is our chance to stand by them – to put a hand on their shoulder and tell them: We are with you. That is the true spirit of Punjabiyat. That is the essence of Chardhi Kala. Every contribution matters – whether it is ₹100 or ₹10,000 – because it is not money alone, but an act of love, empathy, and solidarity. It proves that while floods may wash away buildings, humanity and brotherhood can never be washed away.
