Railway Ministry hikes train fares for long-distance journeys from December 26

NEW DELHI: The Railway Ministry on Sunday announced a marginal increase in passenger train fares for journeys exceeding 215 km, a move aimed at boosting revenue.

Under the revised structure, fares in ordinary class have been increased by 1 paise per kilometre, while 2 paise per kilometre has been added to fares for non-AC classes of mail and express trains and AC classes of all trains for travel beyond 215 km.

The new rates will come into effect from December 26, 2025.

Officials clarified that there will be no increase in fares for monthly season tickets (passes) of suburban trains and for journeys up to 215 km in the normal category of other trains.

According to the ministry, the fare revision is expected to generate around Rs 600 crore in additional revenue for the Railways up to March 31, 2026.
